All The Supplies You’ll Need On Move-In Day

Congratulations on your college admission. Are you ready to start this new chapter of life?

Move-in day is both thrilling and a bit chaotic, with lots of unpacking, organizing, and setting up your new space. Having the right tools and supplies on hand can make the process much smoother and quicker. Trust me…you don’t want to be that guy who is knocking on doors asking for things on your first day.

Below is a list of essentials that will help you breeze through the setup and make your dorm feel like home in no time!

1. Tool Box

A small tool box is a lifesaver on move-in day. Whether you’re assembling furniture or making minor fixes, a small tool box with basic tools like a hammer, screwdrivers, and pliers is invaluable. If your bed isn’t lofted then you’ll need a tool box’s help to loft your bed. Here is one that is small but has all the essentials to be left behind in your dorm room for further use.

2. Step Ladder

A compact, foldable step ladder will help you access high shelves or put up decorations without risking a dangerous balancing act on a chair.

3. Command Strips And Hooks

Most dorms have strict rules about not damaging walls, which makes command strips and hooks a must-have for hanging pictures, posters, and even small shelves. They’re strong, easy to use, and remove without leaving marks. Check with your college, there are some schools which don’t allow command strips.

4. Leveler

For those who want to ensure their wall décor is perfectly aligned (yes…that’s me), a leveler is a smart addition to your move-in day supplies. It guarantees that everything from shelves to picture frames is straight and secure.

5. Zip Ties

Zip ties are your go-to for organizing cords or bundling things together. For example, I’ve used zip ties to attach a headboard to the bed and attached a power strip to the bedpost for easy access. They’re also useful for DIY fixes around the dorm.

6. Scissors

A simple yet crucial item. It’s that one item that is the most overlooked. Scissors come in handy for everything from opening packages to cutting through zip ties and adjusting tags. Here is a sturdy but extremely cheap one for you to pack with your stuff.

7. Wagon or Push Cart

Usually colleges have big bins to transport your belongings from the car to your room but if you aren’t that lucky one to get your hands on it (move in days are super busy) then your arms and back will thank you for getting a wagon or a push cart.

8. Shelf Liners

Not everyone lines their drawers and closet shelves and we did it. A thorough wipe can also get the job done, so it’s a personal preference. This 12″ by 20ft will be more than enough for your dorm room.

10. Moving bags

Moving bags are super handy for move-in day! They’re big, durable, and easy to carry, making them perfect for packing up things like clothes, bedding, and towels. Unlike boxes, these bags can be squished into tight spaces or easily stored once you’re done unpacking. These bags from Veno are very popular among college students.

10. Cleaning Supplies

Lastly, let’s not forget cleaning supplies. Even if the dorm was cleaned before you arrived, a quick wipe down is a must. Stock up on:

Move-in day can be a whirlwind, but by being prepared, you’ll save time and energy, leaving more room to focus on enjoying your new space and making it feel like home. Don’t forget your last hugs and kisses. Happy move-in!
